No one likes to be told they are wrong. Inclusiveness is celebrated; exclusivity is seen as narrow-minded. What do we do with the claim Jesus made when he said, “I AM the Way”? Culture attempts to embrace inclusion by saying all religions are the same, or each religion only sees one part of the whole. The gospel is an invitation to extend your hands towards the One who was wounded to save you.

In a world that glamorizes and celebrates influencers, achievements, and accolades - it is so easy for us to live for power. In our attempts to be recognized as the best, we can become slaves to the people around us. King Herod's desperation to maintain power fueled his decision to have John the Baptist beheaded. Do you have your “routine”; your “comfort zone”? What would make you change it? King Solomon longed to fulfill pleasures by temporary things on earth and forgot that his true comforter, the Lord, is the only one who could satisfy. King Solomon made little concessions and allowed others, overtime, to turn his heart away from God. Identifying areas in our lives that need repentance and spending daily time with God through his word will guard our hearts from the idol of comfort. God should always be at the center. He put us first by sending Jesus to die for us, so that we always have access to the one and only comforter!

No one likes to not be liked. But living for the approval of others can destroy us! King Saul forgot the approval he already had when the Lord anointed him as king. He blamed others to protect his reputation. Remembering that we have been approved of by God through Jesus empowers us to live in obedience to the One who loves us. This simple truth is truly liberating: God loves you!

When our kids mess up, our tendency is to take something away from them. However, punishment shouldn't be the end goal of discipline. Restoration should be. Paul builds on his definition of love by showing us the need for kindness. Without a culture of honor, we cannot discipline our kids the way God invites us to.

Ideal can seem out of reach, and it sometimes feels easier to put it out of sight. Part of being a parent is to point our children toward the ideal, while at the same time navigating what is real.
